| | Leatherback Turtle $106.74 High Quality Content by WIKIPEDIA articles The leatherback turtle (Dermochelys coriacea) is the largest of all living sea turtles and the fourth largest modern reptile behind three crocodilians. It is the only living species in the genus Dermochelys. It can easily be differentiated from other modern sea turtles by its lack of a bony shell. Instead, its carapace is covered by skin and oily flesh. Dermochelys coriacea is the only extant member of the family Dermochelyidae. Instead of teeth the Leatherback turtle has points on the tomium of its upper lip. It also has backwards spines in its throat to help it swallow food. Endangered Leatherback Sea Turtle Nesting, Missing Rear Flippers
how does global warming or other environmental risks affect the Leatherback sea turtle ?
global warming kills coral reefs that house fish that turtles eat. without the reefs, the fish can't survive and the turtles must look elsewhere for food.
light pollution affects breeding turtles-- they lay their eggs on land and their hatchlings make it back to the ocean by following the moonlight's reflection off the water. when the areas near these beaches become populated with houses and buildings that use electricity at night, the baby turtles think these lights are the moon and head in the opposite direction of the ocean, making them more vulnerable to predators and starvation.
also, turtles are especially affected by trash as well. they will often eat floating plastic grocery bags because they resemble jellyfish. a turtle with a stomach full of trash can't digest food properly, won't feel hungry and will eventually die of starvation.
